Best Fudge Cake Recipe

3-1 oz. squares unsweetened chocolate

2/3 cup sugar

½ cup milk

1 large egg, beaten

½ cup shortening

1 cup sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla

2 large eggs

2 cups sifted cake flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

¼ teaspoon salt

2/3 cup milk

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour two, 9” round cake pans.

Combine chocolate, 2/3 cup sugar, ½ cup milk and beaten egg in a saucepan. Cook and stir over low heat until the chocolate melts and the mixture thickens; cool.

Cream the shortening and 1 cup sugar together until fluffy and light. Add vanilla to the creamed mixture. Add 2 eggs, 1 at a time, to the creamed mixture, beating well after each egg. Sift together the flour, baking soda and salt. Add to the creamed mixture alternately with 2/3 cup milk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture; beat after each addition. Blend in the chocolate mixture.

Put into prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes at 350 degrees or until a cake tester comes out clean. Cool in pans for 10 minutes then turn out onto cake racks to finish cooling. Cool completely before frosting.
