½ cup vegetable shortening

1 ½ cups sugar

2 eggs

1 ½ ounces red food coloring

2 level tablespoons cocoa

1 scant teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon baking soda

2 ½ cups cake flour

1 cup buttermilk

2 tablespoons vanilla extract

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour 3, 9-inch cake pans. Cream the shortening and the sugar; add the eggs, and cream until well-blended. Mix the food coloring and cocoa and add to the creamed mixture. Sift the salt, baking soda and cake flour together. Add the dry ingredients and liquids alternately to the creamed mixture. Fold; do not beat. Pour into the prepared pans and bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes. Serve as a three-layer cake, frosted with your favorite white frosting.
